After the sold-out world in
Glasgow last November, the artist David
Shrigley’s first ‘sort-of-opera’, Pass
the Spoon, is staged at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on 5 and 6
May. The opera coincides with the final week of Shrigley’s first major UK
exhibition, David Shrigley: Brain Activity, at the Hayward Gallery,
Southbank Centre.
The show has been getting rave reviews, and is not Shrigley's first musical project. In 2006, Azuli Records released David Shrigley – Forced To Speak With Others,
featuring music written and recorded by David Shrigley and Martin Young with
spoken word performed by Shrigley himself and by numerous actors and friends of
the artists. In 2007, German record label Tomlab brought out Worried Noodles, a double-CD featuring
39 songs by artists such as Franz Ferdinand and Hot Chip, setting
Shrigley’s 2005 songbook of the same name to music.
