US comedian John Oliver has come up with an ingenious way to get one up on US Vice President Mike Pence following the release of his new children's book.

On Monday (March 19), the Christian fundamentalist politician released a new kids book based on the adventures of his family's pet rabbit, titled Marlon Bundo's Day in the Life of the Vice President.

Not only does Pence have a long and well-documented history of opposing LGBT rights, but it's been reported that the book's accompanying tour will work with anti-LGBT group Focus on the Family, a conservative Christian rights organisation that has links to gay 'cure' therapy.

On his Last Week Tonight show, Oliver took aim at the former Governor of Arizona, describing him as an "ashen weasel" and calling the family's rabbit as "the most likeable thing about an otherwise unlikeable man".

The presenter then revealed he had decided to release his own version of Pence's new book, except in this version, the rabbit is gay and falls for another rabbit called Wesley.

"Now, there are a few small differences between the two books... Our Marlon Bundo is gay", Oliver told viewers, adding that the plot revolved around a  "very special boy bunny who falls in love with another boy bunny."

Proceeds from the book will go to LGBT charities The Trevor Project and AIDS United, while stars such as RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) Jim Parson (The Big Bang Theory) and Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) have lined up to record a special audiobook edition.

A description of the book reads: "With its message of tolerance and advocacy, this charming children's book explores issues of same-sex marriage and democracy. Sweet, funny, and beautifully illustrated, this book is dedicated to every bunny who has ever felt different."
