Matt Bomer has revealed that The Normal Heart
has encouraged him to practice safe sex.
The actor stars alongside Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts and Jim Parsons in the HBO drama, which premiered in the UK last night (June 1).
However, Bomer said that he was influenced by Larry Kramer's play long before he joined the TV adaptation.
Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show
, he said: "It encouraged me to practice safe sex. But also, I knew that somewhere out there, there was somebody who understood me and would stand by me."
Parsons recently described the drama - set in New York City in the early 1980s at the onset of the HIV-AIDS epidemic - as a "force for good"
Critics have responded positively to the Ryan Murphy-led television movie
, describing it as "emotionally raw" and a "powerful piece of work".
