Chaz Bono has spoken about his decision to document his female-to-male gender transition on film.
The son of Cher and Sonny Bono appeared in 2011 film Becoming Chaz
, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival and later aired on Oprah Winfrey's television network.
During an interview on RuPaul's Drag Race
, Chaz explained that it felt "important" to him to share his experience with people.
He said: "You know, there was a number of years where I knew I was transgender but was afraid to do anything about it. And so it was kind of important for me to kind of give that back. I figured there’s other people out there like me who are stuck."
Chaz first came out as a lesbian in a 1995 cover story for The Advocate
, before confirming his gender transition in July 2009.
