Clare Balding has responded to critics that suggest she should not be involved with the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
The lesbian TV presenter faced criticism after it was revealed that she would be covering the event for the BBC.
Some suggested that the presenter has agreed to participate in the event purely for the money, whilst others suggested the much-loved presenter should use the opportunity to speak out against the anti-gay laws in Russia.
One Twitter user wrote: "principles before profit time?"
: "No, I’d make more at home, be safer and have an easier life. The reason I’m here is to do my job. Visibility before avoidance #pride."
Other tweets were less sensitive, with some becoming increasingly homophobic towards Balding.
The British presenter - who was voted one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK in 2013 - has also enjoyed support for her coverage at Sochi.
"I think Clare Balding should be commended for heading to Sochi to carry out her duties in the face of LGBT discrimination#NationalTreasure," wrote one user.
