American Horror Story is set to return for a ninth season this autumn, but it will sadly be without one of the show's most popular stalwarts.

Evan Peters, who has appeared in every season of Ryan Murhpy's high-camp horror anthology series, will not be joining his castmates on the set of season nine, it has been confirmed.

It's not all bad news though: Peters, who can currently be seen in '80s ballroom drama Pose on BBC Two, has left the door open for a return to AHS in the future, a la Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, or Jessica Lange.

"I’m gonna sit a season out," the actor told Extra at WonderCon last week, dashing hopes of more anecdotes about his regular full-frontal nudity on set.

As is tradition, details about what fans can expect in AHS season nine are being kept under wraps, but we do know that Emma Roberts is set to return for the latest outing, and that she'll be sharing scenes with Olympic skier and series newcomer Gus Kenworthy, who has been cast as her on-screen boyfriend.

Other casting information is yet to be confirmed, but stars including Sarah Pauloson and Billy Eichner have teased in interviews that they've got inside information about the series, meaning a return for both is likely on the cards.

American Horror Story season nine is expected to premiere in the uS on FX in the autumn.
