Labour MP Luke Pollard has a message for critics of his Valentine's Day post to boyfriend Sydney: "Haters won't win."
The MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport posted a romantic picture of he and Sydney on Sunday (14 February 2021) alongside the caption: "Happy Valentine’s Day to my lovely boyfriend! X”.
Despite hundreds of positive messages, the post unfortunately attracted the attention of homophobic trolls, who called out the perceived age gap of Pollard's relationship.

Comments ranged from "I'm calling Childline" to "he looks 12, you should be locked up."
A third mockingly added: "“Love a father and son photo."
"We have come a long way as a country, but we still have further to go"
Speaking to Attitude today, a defiant Pollard said: "Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about love not hate but I am not sure everyone got that memo. Sydney and I have a great relationship and he’s my rock. Sadly, when you’re in the public eye you expect direct comments, but they should be about the policies I propose or how I vote - not who I fall in love with.

"We have come a long way as a country, but we still have further to go.
"We’re a positive couple and so the trolls may have got the attention, but most of the messages and comments have been supportive.
"Sometimes it’s just worth being reminded what Valentine’s Day is all about: people being in love regardless of the sexuality, gender identity or background of those involved. Love is love and that’s why the haters won’t win.”
