Reality television personality and former supermodel Janice Dickinson has revealed that she has breast cancer.
In an interview with the Daily Mail Online
, the 61-year-old confirmed that she has been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) - breast cancer in its earliest form.
Dickinson, who became a judge on America's Nex Top model
in 2003 and is is well-known in the UK following appearances on I’m Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!
in 2007, and Celebrity Big Brother
in 2015, has become renowned for her fiery personality and outspoken nature.
In the interview, she compared her recent experiences as living in a “nightmarish dream”, and stated how fearful the ordeal has left her, adding that she has decided to share her story publicly in order to demonstrate strength and inspire all women who experience similar trials.
“I am not gonna let that define me… the fear,” said the mother-of-two.
Dickinson also thanked her gay friends for giving her hope to fight, saying: “Thank God for my gays, viva gays, I love my gay men”. She lists her AIDS activism as one of her biggest achievements.
Currently contained in a “pea-sized lump” in her right breast, Dickinson will undergo radio therapy to target the cancerous cells directly, followed by a course of medication which will continue for as long as necessary. The cancer has been caught early, which means her chances of recovery are high.
Her journey will be televised on The Doctors
, which is set to air in the US on 6 April 2016.
