LGBTQs voted for Joe Biden over Donald Trump in the US election, one exit poll shows - but it's not quite the overwhelming majority you might have expected.

Research by Edison Research for the National Election Pool was collected from 15,590 voters and is currently available to view on the NYT.

The poll in question - which is being regularly updated - shows 7% of respondents were gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

Of these, 61% voted for Biden and 28% voted for Trump.

(At the time of writing, the overall result of the election was yet to be announced.)

Straight, cisgendered voters were more evenly split, with 48% voting for Trump and 50% for Biden.

The poll also shows that 48% of male-identifying voters chose Biden and 49% Trump, while 56% of female-identifying voters went with Biden and 43% with Trump.

According to NYT, the surveys interviewed voters outside of polling places or early voting sites, or by phone.
