Nicola Adams nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Nicola Adams has been nominated for the coveted  BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2016. The double Olympic gold-medal-winning boxer became the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title at London 2012 in the women’s flyweight division, and successfully defended her title in Rio earlier this summer. The former Attitude cover star was one the almost 50 openly LGBT athletes who competed at the Rio Olympic Games, with Team GB proudly boasting the highest number of all competing nations, with eight – all of whom were named recipients of Attitude’s Active Award 2016 last month. Another of those was women's hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh, who took home gold alongside wife and teammate Helen in Rio, who has also received a BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award nomination this year. Kate and Helen, who married in 2013 just over a year after winning bronze at the London 2012 Games, became the first same-sex couple in history to win Olympic gold medals when the helped their team defeat the The Netherlands in the final in Brazil. Nicola will go head-to-head with Kate and 14 other nominees when the awards ceremony takes place in Birmingham on Sunday, 18 December. The public will vote for their favourite by phone and online during the live show.
