Words: Thomas Stichbury
When we weren’t bleaching our hair, baking banana bread or optimistically buying home workout gear destined to gather dust – a set of resistance bands can quite easily be fashioned into a makeshift washing line, mind– most of us found safe haven during the various lockdowns by turning on our television sets.
Last year, more so than ever, TV provided a much-needed escape from the real (in this case, pandemic-ravaged) world by giving us moments of pure, unadulterated magic to cling onto – like Nigella Lawson’s pronunciation of ‘microwave’. Has “mee-cro-wah-vay” become anyone else’s safe word? Followed by a swift, sharp “ding!”? Just me then…
Nigella served up a moreish, oh-so-memeable feast with that simple utterance on her cooking show Nigella: Cook, Eat, Repeat and as well as being the telly treat we all deserve, it is one of six nominees up for the Virgin Media Must-See Moment award – the only gong voted for by the British public – at this year’s Bafta TV Awards.
Everyone’s favourite food fondler faces stiff competition from the likes of dance group Diversity, for their powerful – and much-complained about *facepalm*– Black Lives Matter-inspired performance on Britain’s Got Talent, and Netflix’s Bridgeton (sadly not for any intimate scenes involving Regé-Jean Page).
The shortlist was decided by a panel of independent media experts – of which Attitude was a part – and only programmes that aired in 2020 were eligible.
The winner will be announced during the Virgin Media Bafta TV Awards on 6 June 2021, hosted by Richard Ayoade.
A full list of the nominees is below [spoiler alert].
Netflix, Bridgerton – Penelope is revealed as Lady Whistledown
ITV1, Britain’s Got Talent – Diversity perform a routine inspired by the events of 2020
BBC One, EastEnders – Gray kills Chantelle
Channel 4, Gogglebox – Reactions to Boris Johnson’s press conference
BBC Two, Nigella: Cook, Eat, Repeat – "Mee-cro-wah-vay"
Disney+, The Mandalorian – Luke Skywalker appears
