Patrick Warburton: 'Family Guy' is offensive by nature and that's what makes it funny

Last month, executive producers confirmed the show will be 'phasing out' gay jokes

Patrick Warburton says Family Guy is ‘offensive by nature’ which makes it ‘funny’.

In the an episode of the hit adult cartoon show last month, Peter Griffin landed a job as President Trump’s press secretary and although he doesn’t stay long in the job, Peter – who is voiced by creator Seth Macfarlane – tells Trump that Family Guy will be ‘trying to phase out’ gay jokes.

Executive producers Alec Sulkin and Rich Appel confirmed that this would be the case and said the reason is because the ‘climate is different, the culture is different and our views are different’.

And now Warburton – who voices Joe Swanson in the cartoon – has given his opinion on the decision saying the show has not pretended to be anything other than offensive.

He told Digital Spy: “The show has never pretended to be anything other than offensive, it's where the show is rooted.

“The show is stupid and the reason we don't find it offensive is because it's coming out of the mouths of numb-skulled idiots, that's who these people are.

“Peter Griffin, is he evolved? He's the biggest moron in the world so what comes out of his mouth is offensive because he's an idiot. We find offensive things come out of idiots mouths.”

However, he did go on to say although the nature of the show is ‘satire’, if the show ‘specifically targets’ one group more than others it does become bullying.

He continued: “If there is too much gay humour it becomes bullying and I don't like that, so it probably could do with phasing it out.

“The nature of the show is satire and it does seem to be an equal opportunity of slander across the line.

“If it is more specifically targeting one group more than others, I find it a bit bullying that way. But I think all of us should have a little sense of humour in ourselves.

“We all love and accept everybody for who we are. The purpose of a show like Family Guy isn't to truly hurt anybody but it is offensive by nature and that's what makes it funny.”

“I think there are so many things in society that we feel we can't laugh about or joke about because everyone is so sensitive, but there needs to be some outlets like, 'It's okay here because it's satire'.

“If you don't like it you can change the channel which I have actually done in my house before.”
