Actress Ruby Rose has deleted her Twitter account following backlash over her casting as Batwoman.
Rose, 32, announced the news earlier this week on Instagram, revealing she had been cast as Batwoman in the upcoming CW series of the same name. Batwoman, real name Kate Kane, first appeared in the DC Comics universe as a romantic interest for Batman but has been openly gay since 2006 when she was reintroduced as a lesbian of Jewish descent.
Announcing the news, the Orange is the New Black star said she was "thrilled and honoured" to take on the popular character, who will be introduced this December in a crossover episode of other DC television shows The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl.
While Rose garnered praise from Laverne Cox, Mariah Carey and Arrow star Stephen Amell, the actress was hit with backlash from fans who were disappointed the CW didn't cast a Jewish actress.
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
Other negative comments claimed that Rose's acting wasn't good enough, that the network should have given the role to a lesser-known LGBT actress and that Rose hadn't publicly identified as lesbian, making her a bad choice for the role.
Shortly before leaving Twitter, Rose addressed the backlash by tweeting: "Ok tied up some loose ends, read a tweet from my idol, and am deleting Twitter now to focus on my next two projects, so I won't be on here for a while... but can I clear up one last thing that has had me laughing but also baffled?"
She added: "Where on earth 'Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can't be Batwoman' come from - has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I've ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with 'she's too gay' how do y'all flip it like that? I didn't change."
While Rose's Twitter has been deleted, her Instagram account is still available to view though comments have been disabled.
