Tituss Burgess has torn into Andy Cohen following a painfully awkward exchange during Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Burgess, 40, branded Cohen a "messy queen" in an Instagram rant after he appeared to take offence at being asked about working with Eddie Muprhy while appearing on the show alongside Orange Is the New Black's Laverne Cox on Sunday (28 July).

Burgess seemed in good spirits as he was asked about working with Murphy on the upcoming film, Dolemite Is My Name, but when asked about past homophobic jokes made by the actor and comic (which he apologised during the '90s), the atmopsohere immediately became frosty.

Cohen, who previously revealed in his autobiography Most Talkative that Murphy's anti-gay jokes had personally affected him as a young gay man in the closet, asked Burgess: "I just wonder if you got close [t Murphy] at all, because he was very problematic for the gays at one point when I was coming out."

Burgess replied coolly: "Oh, well he wasn't problematic for Tituss. We had a wonderful time. We talked about Dreamgirls. He should have won the Oscar I believe. Any troubles he had with gay people I guess are gone because he loved me."

Cohen replied "very good", before he began introducing the next segment, at which point a decidely unhappy-looking Burgess could be seen on camera rolling his eyes, wagging his finger and whispering a remark.

The gestures were spotted by Cohen, who asked: "What are you saying, Tituss?" causing Burgess to reply dismissively: "Keep going girl, keep doing your show".

Burgess later took to Instagram to respond to a fan who had asked about the awkward exchange, wiriting: “She [Cohen] can be a messy queen! Yes I said it! Don’t care he knows either! He should remember his talk show isn’t an episode of the real housewives of Atlanta!

"It’s a place where artists come to talk about art and have a little fun. NOT a place to rehash old rumors or bring a star negative press.

He continued: "Sunday was a display of ratchet behavior by a well connected man having blatant disregard for one of his guests. If only time were taken to know who I am and not assuming that I am the character I play on tv he would know how to conduct a proper interview with at all! I received 4 Emmy nominations for acting! NOT for being my self.

“He was lucky I had my wits and Christian values THAT day. Always keep it classy. Being friends with other talented celebrities doesn’t make you talented it makes you friends with other famous celebrities! He should rip a page from Anderson Cooper and learn how to do his job.”

Cohen has also commented on the unlikely spat, responding to a viewer on Twitter who branded the episode "the most awkward... I have ever seen", adding that the question about Murphy was "relevant".

"I did too! " Cohen replied. "Awkward is right".

Cohen also addressed the controversy during his during his Sirius XM radio show on Monday (29 July), revealing that Tituss made a hasty exit from the studio after the interview wrapped.

“He ran out of there,” Cohen said. “Did not sign the guest book. He ran out. He was like, ‘He knows I was here.’ That’s what he said to the person who asks to sign the guest book.

"It was something else.”
