Two men are wanted on suspicion of illegally adopting a baby.
An Interpol Red Notice – the highest international alert which seeks the location/arrest of a person wanted by a judicial jurisdiction or an international tribunal with a view to his/her extradition – was issued on the request of the Cyprus police.
Allegedly, the couple – a Greek Cypriot and Turkish national – are reportedly believed to have fled Turkey with the baby from a Filipino woman and are believed to be abroad.
Last week, a 47-year-old woman from the Philippines was detained by police after they were alerted to her bringing a baby to Cyprus on behalf of the two men.
She initially said the baby was hers, but it was later revealed that she was not the mother of the child and is currently being held in police custody.
Police are investigating whether the baby was sold to the couple – who permanently live in Cyprus.
It was also reported by Cyprus Mail Online that the couple had been sending the biological mother €250 per month.
Reports also suggest the Greek man and the woman had been pretending to be the parents of the baby.
