Larry Kramer has adapted his iconic 1985 play of the same name for HBO, and the film will premiere on the US cable network on May 25. A UK premiere has yet to be confirmed. The drama takes place in New York City in the early 1980s at the onset of the HIV-AIDS epidemic. Mark Ruffalo stars as Ned Weeks, a writer and LGBT activist who witnesses the spread of the disease that has begun to claim the lives of many in the gay community, and sets out to discover the truth. Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons, Alfred Molina and Looking's Jonathan Groff also star in the HBO film. Glee and American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy directed from a script Kramer adapted from his own play. Barbra Streisand has recently discussed her struggle to direct her own screen adaptation of Kramer's play, explaining that Ralph Fiennes and Kenneth Branagh were interested in appearing in the version she was working on, and saying: "I'm glad [the film] is finally here."
