Watch: US footballer kisses wife as she celebrates World Cup victory
By Will Stroude
The USA were crowned champions after winning the women’s World Cup final with a 5-2 victory against Japan last night (July 5), and spectators were treated to the touching site of one of the team’s veteran players, Abby Wambach, kissing her wife as the squad celebrated on the pitch.
After the whistle blew in Canada last night, the team’s former captain was seen running to the stands to reunite with her wife Sarah Huffman, who she married in 2013. Coming just ten days after equal marriage was legalised throughout the US, the moment was broadcast to the world on camera and quickly sparked the hashtag #LoveWins on Twitter.
It was an emotional moment for 35-year-old Wambach, who is widely expected to retire following her first World Cup win with the squad. The two-time Olympic Gold medalist and 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year was substituted holds the record for international goal scored, and was substituted onto the pitch during the 79th minute, CNN reports.
