Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has warned that gay marriage and other civil liberties could be under threat following the leak of a draft decision by the US Supreme Court on abortion rights.
The Democrat took to Twitter on Tuesday (3 May) to warn that the horrifying draft opinion which could overturn Roe v. Wade would not only be detrimental to reproductive rights.
According to leaked documents obtained by Politico on Monday (2 May), the Supreme Court is poised to overrule the historic 1973 decision with 5 justices in favour of doing so.
“They’re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on”
In the 98-page leaked document Justice Samuel Alito writes that Roe and Casey (Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 1992) should be overturned as “the Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.”
In a quote retweet of Slate’s senior writer Mark Joseph Stern, Ocasio-Cortez, US representative for New York’s 14th congressional district, wrote: “As we’ve warned, SCOTUS isn’t just coming for abortion – they’re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights.”

She continued: “Manchin is blocking Congress codifying Roe. House has seemingly forgotten about Clarence Thomas. These 2 points must change.”
Following the appointment of Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett during Donald Trump’s presidency the Supreme Court has a conservative lean, which led to fears such laws could be overturned.
“If the Court does overturn Roe, it will fall on our nation’s elected officials at all levels of government to protect a woman’s right to choose,” wrote President Joe Biden reacting to the reported Supreme Court decision.
“And it will fall on voters to elect pro-choice officials this November,” he added.

Similar to AOC, Keith Edwards, the Communications Director for the Democrat Nikki Fried, tweeted: “If they’ll overturn Roe, make no mistake this court is coming for gay marriage next.”

The Supreme Court opinion is not final until it is officially published, which is expected to be in June.
