Heartstopper‘s Kit Connor and Joe Locke have plenty of chemistry in Netflix’s new gay teen drama, but the rising stars have revealed that some kissing scene rehearsals could have gone better.

As they appear on the cover of Attitude’s May/June issue, Kit, Joe and co-stars Yasmin Finney and Will Gao reflect on their time on the set of the series, from most embarrassing moments to who had the weirdest habits.

Kit, who plays rugby-playing Nick, reveals that Joe’s coffee-drinking habit led to some less than perfect smooches.

“I drank a lot of coffee, but I feel like that’s just part of me!” admits Joe. “I would arrive [on set] and have a coffee straightaway because I wouldn’t be able to function.”

Kit pipes up with a smirk: “It did mean there were a couple of kissing scenes where I was punished deeply…”

“This makes me sound like a really bad person!” exclaims Joe. “I had a chewy, I had chewing gum!”

Kit continues: “Yeah, there was one point where you were caught off guard and you were like, ‘Ok, we need to rehearse this kissing scene….”

“And I had a coffee in my hand,” remembers Joe. “I apologise… It’s keeping you awake!”

“That was difficult for me”, smirks Kit. “I thought maybe next time I should eat and egg sandwich or something like that before. Payback!

Elsewher,  the cast reveals that Joe or Yasmin were most likely to fluff up a line, although Will admits to fluffing a lot of lines on the first day, mostly out of nerves.

We’d do the same!

Heartstopper premieres on Netflix from 22 April.
