Jonathan Groff is here for the unexpected parallel between his character in The Matrix Resurrections and his quietly iconic role as Patrick in Looking.

In the new movie, the star plays Agent Smith, a morally ambiguous video games expert from San Francisco – much like Paddy in the beloved HBO drama.

Speaking to Attitude, 33-year-old Groff admitted Smith is Patrick’s “deep secret desire – and funnily enough, mine too!”

“Like tapping into a dream version of an alter ego”

“Playing this character felt like tapping into a dream version of an alter ego,” he explained, in a joint interview with co-star Neil Patrick Harris.

“Like a real badass…that I don’t feel moment-to-moment in everyday life!”

When asked how Paddy would fare in the world of the Matrix, and whether he’d be someone we could rely on, Jon said: “There’s something beautifully reliable about Patrick’s unreliability… that I think makes him reliable.”

Looking ran on HBO from 2014-2016. The Matrix Resurrections is in cinemas from 22 December.

The film also features Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, stars of the original films, plus Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman) Jessica Henwick (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens), and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico).
