Attitude’s Man of Year, supported by Virgin Holidays: Wentworth Miller
By Nick Byam
Wentworth Miller might be about to return to his career-defining role as Prison Break’s Michael Scofield, but it was the British-born Hollywood star’s candid discussion of his struggles with depression, self-loathing and thoughts of suicide that really turned heads this year.
The 44-year-old, who publicly confirmed his sexuality in 2013 after taking a stand against Russia’s newly introduced anti-LGBT ‘propaganda’ law, cut through the insincerity of the social media age as he responded to a body-shaming meme with an open letter that came straight from the heart, in one of the most honest and inspiring statements you’re likely to read about someone’s struggle with self-esteem and depression. We’re honoured to name him our Man of the Year 2016, supported by Virgin Holidays.
Ahead of his return to screens next year, Miller has a message for anyone struggling to come to terms with their sexuality, anyone being bullied because of who they love, or considering suicide as a result of the consequent feelings of being lost, alone, low and in a place so dark that death looks like a viable alternative.
“I would say what others have said: it gets better One day, you’ll find your tribe. You just have to trust that people are out there waiting to love you and celebrate you for who you are,” he says.
“In the meantime, the reality is you might have to be your own tribe. You might have to be your own best friend. That’s not something they’re going to teach you in school. So start the work of loving yourself.”
Miller was presented with his award by Graham Norton at tonight’s star-studded Attitude Awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue, hosted by Alan Cumming.
