‘Moonlight’ leads Independent Spirit Award nominations

has received an impressive five nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, including a nomination for Best Feature.

The gay-coming of age drama film – set for release in the UK early next year – documents the life of a young, black gay kid growing up in an down-and-out part of Miami as he transitions from child, to adolescent, to adult.

The central character, Chiron, is played by three different actors as the film charts his life: Alex Hibbert during his childhood, Ashton Sanders during his adolescence and finally Trevante Rhodes, who takes on the adult Chiron.

Executive produced by Brad Pitt, the film is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and co-stars Skyfall’s Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali (House of Cards) and US singer Janelle Monáe.

Having opened in US cinemas this earlier this year, it’s gone on to become one of the most critically acclaimed film of 2016, having received full marks from over 20 major news outlets.

As well as the five nominations, Moonlight’s entire cast, director and casting director will receive the Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award.

The Independent Spirit Award winners will be announced on February 25.
