Hit musicals Gypsy and Kinky Boots were big winners at last night’s Olivier Awards, as Dame Judi Dench also took home a record eighth award for her role in The Winter’s Tale.
Kinky Boots was named Best New Musical, and former Voice star turned West End professional Matt Henry took Best Actor in a Musical. The show’s writer, Cyndi Lauper, also gave a special live performance of her classic hit ‘True Colors’.
As expected, Gypsy was named Best Musical Revival, and Imelda Staunton was named Best Actress in a Musical.
Other winners included Mark Gatiss for Three Days In The Country and newcomer Denise Gough, who beat Nicole Kidman to the Best Actress award for her role as a recovering alcoholic in People, Places and Things.
This year’s ceremony, which was hosted by Michael Ball, also marked the 40th anniversary of the awards, which are named in tribute to Sir Laurence Olivier.
