Mad Max: Fury Road
was the night’s biggest winner, mostly taking technical prizes. The award for Best Director went to Alejandro G. Inarritu, who also won last year for Birdman.
Other acting prizes went to Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl, while Spotlight – a film about the Catholic Church’s sexual abuse cover up in Boston – took Best Original Screenplay, and the top prize, Best Picture.
Collecting the award, the director Tom McCarthy said: “Pope Francis it’s time to protect the children and restore the faith.”
The political messages of the winners were in keeping with the tone set by presenter Chris Rock, who in his opening monologue tackled the race row which engulfed the Oscars this year, saying: “Is Hollywood racist? Damn right it’s racist!” He went on to say that black actors simply wanted the same opportunities as their white counterparts, but the race row continued to pop up throughout the night, in various comments and sketches.

Music played a big part of the night, with performances from Dave Grohl, The Weeknd and Lady Gaga – who was introduced by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, and performed ‘Till It Happens To You’, for which she was joined by survivors of sexual assault. However, she lost out on the Best Original Song award to Sam Smith, who won for his Bond theme ‘Writing’s On The Wall’.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Smith dedicated his award to the LGBT community of the world, calling himself “a proud gay man”.
