Blondie’s Debbie Harry shares favourite photo of herself: ‘It’s very special’
Exclusive: She's been shot by Warhol, Mapplethorpe and Leibovitz - but as the Sunday Girl reveals, the pic in question was taken by someone closer to home...
Debbie Harry has posed up a storm for some of the world’s most extraordinary photographers and artists, including Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Annie Leibovitz.
But Debbie Harry has revealed her favourite photo of herself of all time – the surprisingly simple but gorgeous shot below – was taken by none other than bandmate and ex-partner, Chris Stein.
In an interview with the Attitude September/October issue, the Blondie frontwoman shares the story behind the photograph, while also explaining how she was never comfortable in front of the camera until she met the veteran songwriter-guitarist-photographer multi-talent.
“It’s a very special photo”

“He [Chris] took a photograph of me on the top of Radio City Music Hall,” Debbie tells us. “I just love the expression coming out of my eyes. It’s so beautiful, and could only really come out for Chris, towards him. It’s a very special photo.”
“I hated having my photo taken [until] working with Chris, who I felt very comfortable with,” Debbie added, before sharing her top tips for working the camera.
“You have to use your imagination. Think of something that’s wonderful to you. Tilt your chin, turn your head to the side. A three-quarter shot is always flattering. Smile mysteriously, or be completely overjoyed – pick an attitude, and just do that! And practise.”
Debbie, along with Chris, was previously photographed for Attitude magazine [top right] in 2017 by Jenny Brough.
The upcoming Blondie: Against the Odds 1974-1982 boxset, out 26 August, contains many more amazing pictures of Debbie, including many taken by Chris.
The Attitude September/October issue is out now.
