Brazilian actor who plays closeted cowboy on TV comes out in real life: ‘How can I not be in this fight?’
“I’m a theatre teacher and I had three students murdered for being LGBTQIA+," says Amaury Lorenz of choice to come out publicly.
Brazilian telenovela star Amaury Lorenzo has come out publicly as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The actor, who appears in the popular primetime soap Terra e Paixão (which translates to Land And Passion), discussed his sexuality while speaking to Extra this week.
In the TV show, Lorenzo plays a closeted cowboy called Ramiro who begins to come to terms with his sexuality after falling in love with another guy.
“I [may] marry another man, cis or trans, a woman, cis or trans” – Amaury Lorenzo
“I consider myself an LGBTQIA+ man,” the actor explained of his openminded approach to identity. “It may be that soon I will marry another man, cis or trans, a woman, cis or trans… I know that the public is curious to know about my sexuality. I have no problem with that.
“The only issue is when the subject comes above my work as an actor.”
Explaining his decision to come out to the public, Lorenzo – who has 548k Instagram followers – said: “I’m a theatre teacher and I had three students murdered for being LGBTQIA+.
“One was killed by his father. I welcomed a friend into my home who was beaten for being with another man on the street. I’ve had former students expelled by evangelical parents for being gay. How can I not be in this fight?”
Lorenzo was interviewed and photographed for Extra alongside his co-star Diego Martins, who is gay.
Martins is known for winning the Pabllo Vittar-hosted Brazilian drag show, Queen Stars.
Asked if fans have been flooding his DMs since his rise to fame, Lorenzo replied: “[I’ve received] a lot of nudes! One of these days I was running at the beach and had to stop all the time to take pictures with fans. One of those fans asked if they could touch my ass. I allowed it, whatever.”
