Bros ‘changed my life’ says director Nicholas Stoller
"It's one of the great things about making movies - you get to step into the shoes of other people."
The director and co-writer of the gay rom-com Bros, Nicholas Stoller, says working on the film “changed my life”.
Nicholas co-wrote the film with its leading man, Billy Eichner and directed the principally LGBTQ cast for Hollywood’s first gay rom-com from a major studio (Universal)
Speaking to Attitude at the UK launch of the film on Wednesday (26 October) Nicholas says the press tour has been good.
“It’s so exciting and it’s been thrilling to catch the movie play in front of different audiences around the world. And it’s played well every time, which you don’t know until you start screening it.”
The responses Nicholas has observed range from laughter to tears he explains. Nicholas also dismisses the “disappointing” US box office figures. He’s confident the film will have a life after the theatrical release likening it to another of his films, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
On the personal impact that making Bros has had on him personally Nicholas says, “it changed my life”.
“I’m straight and getting to make a movie that’s about the LGBTQ experience with an entirely LGBTQ cast and working with Billy, adjusted my view of the world a little. It’s one of the great things about making movies – you get to step into the shoes of other people.”
Nicholas also teased his upcoming Apple TV+ show, Platonic, which will also star Bros‘ Luke Macfarlane.
The show which focuses on a platonic friendship between Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen’s characters will see Luke play Rose’s husband.
“He’s playing a really different character from Aaron,” says Nicholas referring to Luke’s Bros character. “He’s very emotive in Platonic. Obviously, he’s playing straight, but he’s very emotive, very emotional, kind of nerdy, it’s kind of funny. He’s really funny.”
Bros will be available in UK cinemas from Friday 28 October.
