Alan Carr is to host a new singing competition on Channel 4.

The bespectacled comedian will front The Singer Takes It All, which promises to take a more comedic approach to talent contests than the likes of The Voice and The X Factor.

Contestants will perform on a stage that is manipulated by viewers, who can vote up to four times during a performance through a special app. Singers that please the public will move towards the ‘gold zone’ where they will battle it out for a cash prize, while performers received negatively will be sent to the back of the stage and risk being eliminated from the show.

There will be no judges as such – although a number of celebrity special guests are expected to feature during the show’s four-episode run.

Channel 4’s head of entertainment Justin Gorman said in a statement:

“We thought, ‘How can we making voting exciting again?’. Lots of shows have implemented a voting system since it was pioneered by Big Brother, but the exciting thing about The Singer Takes It All is it’s all about a 90-second performance. There are real moments of drama, but it still feels like a game.”

The Singer Takes It All

will air at an unspecified date in August.
