Ann Widdecombe says ‘families’ won’t like same-sex couples on Strictly

Ann Widdecombe has said “viewers of Strictly” and “especially families” aren’t interested in seeing same-sex couples on Strictly Come Dancing.

We think LGBTQ+-headed families and allies generally might disagree!

The politician’s remarks come as Olympian Nicola Adams and pro dancer Katya Jones made their Strictly debut on Saturday.

Ann competed on the BBC One show in 2010, partnered with Anton du Beke, finishing in sixth place.

Speaking about Strictly’s historic first same-sex dancing pair, former Shadow Home Secretary Ann said (as per The Times): “I don’t think it is what viewers of Strictly, especially families, are looking for.

The Brexit Party figure added: “But that’s up to the audience and the programme.”

Throughout her political career, the former Conservative party member has consistently voted against LGBTQ equality.

For instance, in March 2003 the 73-year-old voted to maintain a ban on the promotion of homosexuality in schools.

In 2019, she received backlash for comments about gay conversion therapy, saying on Sky’s Sophy Ridge: “The fact that we think it is now quite impossible for people to switch sexuality doesn’t mean that science might not be able to produce an answer at some stage.”
