Aussie athlete: ‘I stage bombed Kylie at Commonwealths’
By Sam Rigby
Were you a little confused when a woman, who was not Kylie, appeared on stage at the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony last night (August 3)?
Many viewers were left wondering whether Genevieve LaCaze was meant to fill in for the Into the Blue singer as she exited the stage for a quick costume change, but the Australian athlete has confirmed that she invaded the stage looking for a “claim to fame”.
LaCaze appeared on stage and started dancing with Kylie’s backing dancers towards the end of The Locomotion, and managed to perform for almost a full minute before she was removed by security.
Speaking about the stage invasion, LaCaze told news.com.au: “I just wanted a little bit of claim to fame. I wanted a little bit of TV time; I am turning 25, so why not.”
“I’ll just embrace it while I haven’t gotten in trouble yet,” she added. “I could have grabbed the microphone and shown a little bit of vocals but I don’t know how talented I am in that area.”
The 25-year-old made her Commonwealth debut at the Glasgow games, and finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase.
Kylie performed a seven-song set at the ceremony, while Lulu, Prides and Australian singer Jessica Mauboy also took to the stage – read more about the Closing Ceremony here.
