Azealia Banks: ‘I didn’t call all gay men f*ggots, just Perez Hilton’
By Josh Haggis
Azealia Banks has defended calling Perez Hilton a “faggot”, saying that she considers the word to mean “anybody that hates women”.
The bisexual rapper was widely criticised early last year (2013) when she used the word ‘fag’ or ‘faggot’ as an insult during a confrontation on Twitter with gossip blogger Perez Hilton. She later apologised for using the phrase, saying that she hoped “the entire LGBT community can forgive her”.
In a new interview, the notoriously mouthy star has once again addressed the controversy, arguing that the word was directed solely at Hilton and not the rest of the gay community.
“It’s like, y’all sing along to my words when I’m saying ‘nigga’ and ‘cunt’, but as soon as I call this one white man a faggot the whole world exploded, she told The Guardian. “Listen, I didn’t say all gay men are faggots; I said Perez Hilton is a faggot, so don’t try and bring the rest of the gays down with your faggotry.”
Banks went on to reiterate comments made by Rose McGowan earlier this month (November), about misogyny in the gay community, which the Charmed actress later apologised for – click here to read her comments in full.
“A lot of gay men are way more misogynistic than straight men,” Banks says. “The shit they say about women behind their backs, it’s like: ‘Wow, oh my God!’ You can be a straight faggot, you can be a gay faggot. A faggot is anybody that hates women.”
Meanwhile, Banks released her long-delayed debut album, Broke with Expensive Taste, without warning last week – find out more here.
