Bafta 2019 nominations: ‘The Favourite’ leads the pack as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ lands seven nods

LGBT stories look set for a strong showing at the 2019 Bafta Film Awards, with  The Favourite and Bohemian Rhapsody among this year’s most celebrated nominees.

Royal period drama The Favourite leads the way with 12 nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Actress for Olivia Colman and Best Supporting Actress nods for Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who’s also up for Best Director, the acclaimed movie tells the story of 17th century British monarch Queen Anne and her supposed female lovers Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough (played by Weisz) and Churchull’s impoverished cousin Abigail Hill (Stone).

Bohemian Rhapsody will also be looking for another good night following its shock Best Picture win at the Golden Globes on Sunday (6 January) – though it won’t be in the running for the equivalent award at the Baftas.

Despite missing out on a nomination for Best Film, the Queen biopic is up for seven awards, including Outstanding British Film Best Actor for its Golden Globe-winning lead Rami Malek.

Another surprise Golden Globes winner, Green Book, also receives four Bafta nominations.

Starring Moonlight’s Maharshala Ali, the comedy-drama delves into the life of African-American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley, who was married to a woman but who was reported to have had various sexual encounters with men over the course of his life.

In other good news, last year’s stellar Alexander McQueen biopic, McQueen, has scored two nominations, for Outstanding British Film and Best Documentary. 

Featuring archive footage and interviews with the late designer’s family and friends, it takes an intimate look at the life of the gay fashion pioneer, who tragically took his own life in February 2010 at the age of 40.

Little Monsters will also be pleased to know that Lady Gaga is up for Best Actress for her musical turn as asipiring singer Ally in A Star Is Born – though The ‘Applause’ singer faces stiff competition from Colman and The Wife’s Glenn Close, who beat both to the Golden Globe last weekend.

A Star Is Born remains one of this year’s big contenders however, with a further six nominations including for Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Sound, and Leading Actor for Bradley Cooper.

The winners will be announced whe the 2019 Bafta Film Awards ceremony takes place on 10 February – but until then get updating your charts with the full list of nominees below:
