Ben McKenzie’s Batman prequel show ‘Gotham’ for Channel 5

Channel 5 have acquired the rights to air upcoming Batman prequel series Gotham, it has been announced.

The dark crime drama will star The OC‘s Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon in the days before he became Commissioner of Gotham City. During his investigations Gordon will encounter recognisable friends and foes from the Batman universe, as he works to solve the shocking murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents.

David Mazouz will play the young Bruce Wayne in his pre-teen, pre-caped crusader years, with Sean Pertwee in the role of Wayne’s butler-turned-guardian Alfred Pennyworth. Jada Pinkett-Smith will also have a recurring role as the hotheaded gang boss Fish Mooney.

Channel 5’s Head of Acquisitions Katie Keenan said in a press statement:

“I don’t think there was a more exciting show at the LA screenings this year – Gotham is a thrilling drama built on iconic characters that fascinate. Channel 5 is delighted to become the home of such a powerful, bold and visually stunning show. Its acquisition proves we continue to be committed to the biggest in US drama.”

The series will premiere on Channel 5 in the autumn, not long after its American debut in September on the FOX network.
