Billy Porter puts Trump on blast in LGBTQ State of the Union address – WATCH
Please be upstanding for OUR gay President.
By Will Stroude
Billy Porter has put US President Donald Trump on blast in a rousing LGBTQ State of the Union address.
The Emmy, Tony and Grammy award-winning star of Pose delivered a rousing queer call-to-arms in a speech for US network Logo, designed to offer an LGBTQ alternative to Trump’s own speech in Congress on Wednesday (4 February).
The seven-and-a-half minute video sees Porter, 50, reflect on the state of LGBTQ rights both at home and abroad as the United States gears up for another presidential election this November.
Sharing a clip of the speech on Instagram, Porter made a nod to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s decision to rip up a copy of Trump’s own State of the Union speech in congress on Wednesday.
“This is a State of the Union Address that @speakerpelosi can enjoy!” Porter wrote.
The speech itself sees Porter declare: “In 2020, our responsibility as citiziens has never been more evident. Our nation is facing one of the biggest crises of my life time.
“So far, our nation has survived the first term of Donald Trump, but who’s to say what another term would do to this country, to democracy, and, truly, to the entire world.
“Donald J. Trump has painted himself as a friend of the LGBTQ community, while revealing his true colours at every malicious turn.”
Porter goes on to highlight the damage Trump has inflicted on the LGBTQ community since his inauguration just over three years ago, including banning transgender people from the military, expanding a ‘conscience rule’ allowing health-care workers to discriminate against queer people, rolling back protections for federally funded homeless shelters for trans people, and appointing a string of anti-LGBTQ federal judges to life-time posts.
All in all, it’s the perfect speech to get you motivated for one of the most important elections in a generation. Check it out in full below:
