Bimini has said she thought it was a joke that her verse from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK‘s ‘UK Hun?’ was nominated for a BAFTA.
It was announced in March that her verse from the United Kingdolls track from the second season of Drag Race UK was up for the Must-see moment at the 2022 Virgin Media BAFTA Awards.
Speaking to Attitude on the red carpet at the 2022 Virgin Media BAFTA Awards on Sunday (8 May) Bimini revealed she had laughed at the idea initially.
“It feels amazing”
“I thought it was a joke at first but it feels amazing because it was such a weird time for a lot of people. So, to have brought some light and joy, that’s why we do what we do.”
She added: “I actually didn’t think… I thought it was a joke. ‘Bing, bang, bong!’ everyone loved it – it was fun, it was tongue in cheek, it was a laugh, so I think it was important.”
The truly iconic moment was up alongside Adele being surprised by her teacher during An Audience With Adele and Ant and Dec dig at Downing Street’s lockdown parties during I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
Colin’s AIDS diagnosis in It’s A Sin, the ‘Red Light, Green light’ scene from Squid Game, and Rose and Giovanni’s silent dance to ‘Symphony’ on Strictly Come Dancing were also nominated.
In the end, it was Rose and Giovanni that took the gong home.
We’re sad for Bimini. ‘BAFTA Bimini’ or ‘Bimini BAFTA’ has as ring to it… Anyway, we’re still listening to ‘UK Hun?’ endlessly so!
The song’s success prompted calls for it to be submitted at the UK’s Eurovision Song Contest entry. Sadly, that didn’t happen, but we’ll just be happy that we got it in the first place!
The Attitude May/June issue is out now.
