Bradley Cooper revisits infamous ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ gay sex scene
By Will Stroude
It might have bombed at the box office back in 2001, but the ensuing cult following for Wet Hot American Summer ensured not only that it got a star-studded Netflix prequel series this year, but that Bradley Cooper and Michael Ian Black’s steamy tool shed sex scene has been given the spotlight it deserves.
Cooper played the role of a gay camp counselor in the satirical comedy film, alongside co-stars that included Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks – and during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week, the American Sniper star recalled exactly how shooting went down.
Revealing that the infamous scene wasn’t choreographed beforehand, Cooper told Meyers: “I remember we kept out socks on for it. They were big ’80s tube socks. I remember there was a lot of that – what’s that sweat stuff – that glistening gel! I remember them applying it to Michael and thinking ‘This is crazy!’
“But the joke in that scene was to make it the one serious scene in the whole movie. The whole film is jokes and then that one’s shot seriously, lit well…”
The 40-year-old added: “[We played it] totally real! And we were both trying to pretend it wasn’t going to happen when we first met, because we all stayed in the infirmary in a camp, and I remember playing ping-pong with him, knowing that the countdown to the sex scene was like two weeks away, pretending that everything’s fine.”

And of course, here’s the scene itself to refresh your memory…
