Brittany Murphy’s final film is to open in US cinemas on April 4 – over four years since the actress’s sudden death in 2009.

Thriller Something Wicked wrapped filming just months before Murphy was found dead in her Hollywood home, aged just 32 – a death later attributed to pneumonia and severe anaemia.

According to the film’s producer, Joe Colleran, the delay was caused by reshoots necessary after Murphy’s death and the difficulty of accessing locations in the right weather conditions – plus the emotional burden of handling her final project.

“It is an additional responsibility, you do want her performance to be the best it can be, because unfortunately it’s her last performance” he told New York Daily News. “The first months of reviewing the footage and starting to put things together and then seeing her and hearing her voice, it’s very emotional.”

Something Wicked follows a newlywed couple whose honeymoon is ruined by a psychopathic stalker and dark secrets from their past that come back to haunt them.

The film stars One Tree Hill actress Shantel VanSanten and John Robinson as the married couple, while Murphy plays Susan, a therapist, in a performance that Colleran describes as “very chilling”.

Something Wicked will begin a limited release on April 4 in Eugene, Oregon – where it was filmed – before being rolled out to additional US cinemas depending on demand. Further details are available on the film’s Facebook page.
