‘Celia Imrie came to my same-sex wedding on board the Queen Mary’

By Nick Bond

In the current Style Issue of Attitude, out now, we’ve devoted our ‘Big Gay Following’ section to one of the UK’s most respected actresses – the one and only Celia Imrie.

One excerpt from our chat with Celia proved popular when we shared it online last week: we politely queried whether the Ab Fab and Calendar Girls actress had ever set foot in a gay bar, and received the most fabulously camp and detailed answer.

“Have I ever been to a gay bar?! Oh Lord yes, of course! Honestly, have I ever been to a gay bar?! Of course I have!” Imrie said, before recounting her last experience, just a few weeks ago: she was sailing home from America aboard the Queen Mary (as you do), having a drink at the on-board gay bar, and found herself invited to the wedding of two lovely chaps she’d met on board.

“It was fabulous. I arrived in my tailsuit with Christmas lights around my neck and got an applause from the Friends of Dorothy as I walked through the bar.”

One of the grooms in question, Andrew Talbot, got in touch with Attitude over the weekend to share some snaps from his big day on the high seas.

” There’s no business like show business and it sure felt like a showbiz affair having the lovely Celia Imrie sharing in our special day,” Andrew told Attitude.

“She was such fun and it is a lovely memory to treasure.”
