Celia Imrie’s brilliant response to the question ‘Have you ever been to a gay bar?’
In the Style Issue of Attitude, out now, we devote our ‘Big Gay Following’ section to one of the UK’s most respected actresses – the one and only Celia Imrie.
Famous for roles in classics such as Calendar Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Acorn Antiques, the 62-year-old chats to us from the south of France (where else?), which just happens to be the setting of her first non-fiction book Not Quite Nice.
Oh, and here’s a surprise: Our Celia is as camp as a row of tents. Here’s her INCREDIBLE response when we rather naively asked if she’d ever been to a gay bar:
“Have I ever been to a gay bar?! Oh Lord yes, of course! Honestly, have I ever been to a gay bar?! Of course I have! I was at a huge gay bar on the Queen Mary recently. On the Queen Mary, which is how i came back from America. They have a marvellous bar called The Commodore and they have ‘Friends of Dorothy’ on there for an hour or so. I used to go up there and say hello, of course! All these men had just met, and I was asked to go to a wedding for two gentlemen that the captain officiated. It was fabulous. I arrived in my tailsuit with Christmas lights around my neck and got an applause from the Friends of Dorothy as I walked through the bar. This was only a few weeks ago.
“Have I ever been to a gay bar?! Honestly!”
Queen Mary. Friends of Dorothy. A TAILSUIT AND BLOODY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. Folks, this may well be the best response ever to the question ‘Have you been to a gay bar.’ Hats off to you, Celia.
