Popular X-Men comic book character Gambit is to return to the big screen in his own film starring Channing Tatum.

Tatum will take over the role from Taylor Kitsch, who portrayed Gambit – a professional thief who can manipulate kinetic energy – in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

As well as starring as Gambit, Deadline reports, Tatum will serve as one of the film’s producers.

Meanwhile, makers Fox have hired RoboCop writer Josh Zetumer to pen the screenplay, which will be based on a treatment by long-running Marvel Comics writer, Chris Claremont. The film’s director has yet to be confirmed.

Tatum will also be seen soon in the eagerly-anticipated Magic Mike sequel, whose full cast and plot details have recently been revealed – find out more here.
