Charlie Carver: ‘I’ve always been proud of who I am’
Former Desperate Housewives star Charlie Carver is set to star in the upcoming gay biopic, I Am Michael.
The biopic tells the true story of Michael Glatze, the co-founder of Young Gay America and a strong advocate for gay rights, who later denounced homosexuality after a health scare. Turning to religion, he became a pastor and married a woman in 2013.
I Am Michael stars Zachary Quinto, James Franco and Carver who plays Tyler, a student who gets caught up in a three way romance along with a very notorious sex scene.
Speaking to ET Online, Charlie Carver, who came out last January through a series of Instagram photos, has revealed that working alongside Quinto has been inspirational.
“I’m so glad to have met, worked with and become friends with Zach,” the actor said.
“He’s somebody who I admire very much and somebody who has carried who he is out in the public in a very admirably way.”
Speaking on coming out, Carver said, “I’ve always been proud of who I am.”
“I came out to my family when I was 17 – but the movie, that process did awaken something in me.”
Part of his decision to do was because he was “ready to take on that conversation in a more public forum.”
“For me, I wanted to feel I was in a place where I could work comfortably and where I felt like I had something to say.”
The former Teen Wolf star has also revealed he’s more conscious about the roles he wants to play since coming out.
“I just think, ‘How can I create? How can I have the career I want, but also, how can I contribute to expanding the narrative available to LGBT people and the narrative for people to see?'”
He adds, “I think there are a lot of stories that happen to include LGBT voices that aren’t told.”

I Am Michael previously premiered at 2015’s BFI Flare LGBT film festival and is now available on iTunes in America, though no UK release date has been announced.
