Charlie Condou: ‘Being gay has never hurt my career’

Charlie Condou has said that being an out gay man has “never hurt” his acting career.
The former Coronation Street star – who bowed out of the ITV soap last month (July) – concedes, however, that sexuality may still be an issue for actors who want to become Hollywood leading men.
Speaking to Paris Lees in the latest digital issue of Attitude, Charlie says: “Being gay has never hurt my career and I’ve always been open from the start, but even now there are still actors in big Hollywood films who are not out and that do think it would be a problem for them.”
Asked whether he personally knows any closeted actors, the 41-year-old replies: “Of course I do! I think you’d be surprised by how many. There are people who are starting to do very well, that are gay, there are people we hear rumours about and ones that we don’t.”
