Cher on ‘The Cher Show’ Broadway musical changes: ‘It’d be easier if I was dead’

The stage show based on the legendary singer's life is set to hit Broadway this December.

Cher has revealed that the upcoming musical based on her life is still being “changed and refined” just weeks ahead of its Broadway premiere.

The Cher Show, which first announced in 2015, will chart the 72-year-old’s life over three key eras and includes classic hits from her career including ‘I Got You Babe’, ‘Believe’, ‘Take Me Home’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’.

The musical made its world premiere at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre in June with actresses Teal Wicks, Micaela Diamond and Stephanie J. Block portraying Cher, but the lady herself – ever the perfectionist – appeared unconvinced, saying the production still needed “work”.

Speaking in a world exclusive interview in the October issue of Attitude – available to download and to order globally – the Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again star provides an update on The Cher Show’s current status, joking that it would be easier to finalise if she were dead.

“I am happy with some of the things — I’m dancing with joy over some of the things,” Cher says of the musical, which has a book penned by Jersey Boys‘ Rick Elise.

“Some of the things have to be changed and refined. If I was dead it would be easier.”

She goes on: “Because I wouldn’t be going: ‘That’s not right, that’s not right, we’re not doing that, can’t do that’.

“I think it’s just better to make a musical about someone after they’re dead.”

This being Cher, you get the impression she’d still have something to say about things even then.

“I might”, she says, giving a wry smile. “I would make my presence known — I’d rattle something every time I didn’t like things!”
