Cher really hated ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, says songwriter

Diane Warren has revealed that she had to persuade Cher to record her hit single If I Could Turn Back Time.

The songwriter recently attended the singer’s ‘Dressed To Kill Tour’ in Los Angeles, and heard Cher complain that she never liked Just Like Jesse James, another song penned by Warren.

However, Warren told The Hollywood Reporter: “But she’s got the wrong song! The song she really hated was If I Could Turn Back Time, but I held her leg down during a session and said, ‘You have to record it!'”

According to Warren, Cher responded: “Fuck you, bitch! You’re hurting my leg! OK, I’ll try it.”

Once the singer had laid down vocals on the track, she conceded that Warren had been right. It went on to chart in the top ten in both the US and UK.

Warren added: “If you look at Cher’s song history, she’s not always the best judge of her own material. I mean, she hated I Got You Babe.”
