Cher: ‘There is no ‘but’ about my love for Chaz’
By Will Stroude
Her struggle to come to terms with her son’s status as the world’s most prominent transgender man has been widely documented, but Cher has taken to Twitter to remind her followers that when it comes to her love for Chaz Bono, there are no ‘buts’.
The 69-year-old gay icon’s son Chaz, who previously came out as a lesbian in 1995, revealed he was undergoing a gender transition in 2009 – something which Cher admitted was “difficult” for her to accept at the time.
But replying to a fellow parent of a transgender child on Twitter yesterday (June 30), the Woman’s World singer reminded people she was “lucky” to have a child so happy in their own skin.
After a user tweeted: “My son is like your son. But we will still love them always and forever”, Cher replied: “NO… “BUT” I ADORE MY SON/CHILD”.
She continued: “I’m so lucky to have a child so kind, smart, funny AND HAPPY”.

In 2011, Chaz became the first trangender contestant to take part on America’s Strictly counterpart Dancing with the Stars. Speaking to Oprah about his transition that year, he said there was “no doubt” about his mother’s love for him.
“The hard thing for my mom is that because she is a public figure and because she has this personality of being so cool about stuff and progressive, people forget that she’s a parent,” the 44-year-old said.
“The truth is a lot of parents never speak to their transgendered kids again. That’s not the case in my family. There’s no doubt about her love for me.”
Cher continued to own Twitter with her iconic posts earlier this month with a hilariously shady response to the news of Donald Trump’s US presidential bid – find out more here.
