Christina Aguilera is set to headline Brighton Pride this summer, as the UK’s biggest Pride festival returns following a three-year absence.
Six-time Grammy Award winner Aguilera will ensure Brighton & Hove Pride returns with a bang as the international superstar takes to the Main Stage at the We Are Fabuloso festival in Preston Park on Saturday 6 August. (Tickets are already available now here).
The Pride-exclusive performance will see Aguilera follow in the footsteps past Brighton Pride headliners including Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue (and almost Mariah Carey, who was due to perform in 2020 before the event was forced to be post-poned due the Covid-19 pandemic).
Aguilera has long demonstrated allyship with the LGBTQ community, and preceded many of her contemporaries in including explicitly LGBTQ representation in her work when she included a transgender woman and a passionate gay kiss in the video for 2002’s UK chart-topper, ‘Beautiful’. (You can read more about the legacy of that music video here).
After helping to raise funds in the fight against HIV/AIDS, advocating for marriage equality and speaking out against anti-LGBTQ bullying, Aguilera was honoured with a Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Ally for Equality Award in 2019.
In a ‘love letter’ to the LGBTQ community written in 2017, Aguilera said: “The LGBTQ community has never had it easy, the struggles each one of you faces daily on an individual level and on a broader political and cultural level are unimaginable, yet you keep fighting, you keep moving forward trailblazing and beating all odds with love always in your hearts.”
Paul Kemp, Director of Brighton Pride, said in a statment: “As we celebrate our (delayed) 30th anniversary, we are really thrilled to have secured an iconic star and LGBTQ+ ally such as Christina Aguilera to perform at the Preston Park Pride festival, our main fundraiser for the Brighton Rainbow Fund. It’s going to be ‘Beautiful’.”
Brighton Pride festival takes place over the weekend of 5-7 August, with BRIT Award winner Paloma Faith set to headline the event on Sunday 7, the day after Aguilera.
