The first trailer for the latest live action version of Cinderella has finally been released, offering our first proper look at Billy Porter in his groundbreaking role as a ‘genderless’ Fairy Godmother.
Sony’s reimagined musical version of the classic fairytale stars pop singer Camila Cabello in the titular role, with Pose star Porter supporting as the first man to play the princess-to-be’s magical guardian on the big screen.
Cinderella‘s newly-released trailer – which dropped on Tuesday (3 August) one month ahead of the film’s premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 3 September – shows Porter’s Fairy Godmother transform from a glowing golden butterfly as they descend on Cabello’s Cinderalla to help her go to the infamous ball, declaring: “I am your fabulous godmother!”
In a line worthy of Porter’s Pose alter-ego, Pray Tell, the Fair Godmother adds: “Do you want to go to that ball and meet a bunch of rich people who will change your life?!”
Reflecting on his groundbreaking role in Cinderella last year, Porter said: “Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless – at least that’s how I’m playing it. And it’s really powerful. It’s going to be a classic fairytale for a new generation.”
The 51-year-old Emmy winner added: “I think the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grown-ups that are slowing stuff down.”
Cinderalla, also stars Broadway legend Idina Menzel as Cinderella’s stepmother, Vivian, former Bond star Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan and James Corden as a mouse-turned-footman.
Reassuringly, this latest incarnation of Cinderella looks set to update some of the fairytale’s more regressive plot beats, with Cabello’s kitchen girl dreaming of starting her own business rather than just meeting her Prince Charming.
Cabello, who launched a chart comeback with new single ‘Don’t Go Yet’ last month, is also set to lend her voice to the big screen musical with recorded covers of tracks including Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’, Janet jackson’s ‘Rhythym Nation’ and Jeffifer Lopez’s ‘Let’s Get Loud’ alongside two original tracks.
Cinderella premieres on Amazon Prime Video on 3 September. Watch the first trailer below:
