‘Coco’ co-director Adrian Molina is ‘all for’ an LGBT Pixar film
The director and screenwriter says he's ready for an LGBT Pixar movie
Coco‘s co-director Adrian Molina has said he’s “all for” an animated LGBT Pixar film.
The openly gay director, who is married to husband Ryan Dooley, has worked on some of Pixar’s biggest hits including Toy Story 3 and Ratatouille. He also co-directed and co-wrote 2017’s Coco, which tells the story of a 12-year-old Mexican boy who finds himself transported to the Land of the Dead.
Since its release, the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning movie has been praised for sparking a discussion about representation on-screen, so could we soon see an LGBT Pixar film?
In a new interview with the Huffington Post, Molina said: “I think you’d have to have someone with a really great idea.
“It would have to be a compelling story that had universal appeal [and] there are so many beautiful stories to be told and so many characters to explore. I’m all for it.”
He later explained that he hopes to see a diversity of stories focusing on the LGBT community, saying: “Many people have this experience in many different ways. I want to see many interpretations of that.
“I think that’s possible. There are plenty of brilliant artists who are up to that challenge. Even having to define it as queer storytelling – it’s all just storytelling.”
He added: “I’d love to see so much of it you can’t quantify it.”
Molina, who made headlines after thanking his husband during his Oscar speech, also touched on why the film resonates with LGBT audiences.
He said: “I think the struggle Miguel goes through – between having this personal passion, this intuitive sense of the person he is, but being unable to show that, and the way he works through his conflict – [can speak] to the journey of a queer person.”
