Universal have announced plans for a sequel to surprise comedy hit Pitch Perfect, with Elizabeth Banks at the the helm.

The actress produced the original, which went on to make over $113 million (£68 million) at the box office on a budget of only $17 million (£10 million). The film centered on a college student who reluctantly joins a college acapella group called the Bellas, only to end up leading them to the finals of a singing competition.

The film starred Oscar-nominated actress Anna Kendrick and Bridesmaids favourite Rebel Wilson, and received glowing reviews from critics upon its release in 2012. It also gave us the song Cups, which ended up going triple platinum in the US.

“Elizabeth originated the idea for Pitch Perfect and was instrumental in making the first film such a huge success,” Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley said in a statement. “She brings an enormous amount of energy and experience to everything she works on and we’re thrilled that she is making her feature directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2.

Banks was last seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which has gone onto gross over $850 million (£513 million) worldwide, and her voice will be heard in The Lego Movie, which is released in the UK on February 14.
