‘Coronation Street’: Antony Cotton teases new gay storyline
By Sam Rigby
star Antony Cotton has teased a new and possibly controversial storyline for his character, Sean Tully.
The actor – who recently signed a new contract with the ITV soap – predicted that the new plot will “wind a lot of people up”.
He told attitude.co.uk at the World Pride Power List event in London last night (June 27): “We’re going to start it in autumn. By the fact that Sean is a resident homosexual of the parish, it is a gay storyline. It’s going to be a story that’s never been done before, and it’s a great story.
“I’m thrilled and very excited by it. It’s a real honour for us to do it, because it’s going to wind a lot of people up. I can’t tell you anymore about it. Fans of the show will enjoy it, and it’ll be fun. But there’s an element to it that I think will get some people wound up.
The actor added: “That’s what television drama should do, it should provoke people and push people’s buttons. That can only be a good thing.”
Meanwhile, Cotton also revealed that he has had a sneak preview of Russell T Davies’s new gay-themed Channel 4 drama Cucumber.
“I think he’s waited just the right time,” Cotton said of the time that has elapsed since Queer as Folk. “I think people would have had this series off him a year after Queer as Folk, but he’s gone off and done other things.
“He’s changed television yet again with Doctor Who and that truly is a global phenomenon. Queer as Folk was also a global phenomenon, and I think this one will be too.
“I think it will wind some people up. I’ve read bits of it and it’s going to be brilliant,” he teased.
